Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) are a group of Irish companies, mostly in the Engineering Sector, that provide innovative and practical solutions to a broad range of customer’s needs.  Many are market leaders in their field.  They range in size from SME’s and family run businesses to larger companies. The OEM Apprenticeship is targeted at the Original Equipment Manufacturing, Installation and Services Sector which sells to National and International markets.


Objective of the Apprenticeship

The OEM Apprenticeship has two core objectives

  1. To provide trained OEM Apprentices, thereby bridging the gap for the OEM industry.
  2. To offer credible career paths and progression routes for these apprentices.


Why choose this Career?

The OEM Sector manufactures a range of products that contain complex electrical, battery, electro-mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic technology. As an OEM Technician you will be trained in a diverse range of engineering skills in order to assemble a varied range of components, involving a range of processes, in order to manufacture and support original equipment. An OEM Engineering Technician is tasked with assembling, testing, servicing and maintaining a range of original, engineered plant and equipment, to include unique & bespoke solutions to customer’s needs.


  • This will involve assembling, testing and commissioning systems, electrical wiring systems, battery powered systems, hydraulics systems, pneumatic systems and control systems.


  • Interpreting technical data and use calibration, torquing, and testing instruments for effective product assembly, fault diagnosis and rectification.


  • Installation and calibration of sensors and transmitting and controlling devices.


  • Working with cross functional teams such as research and development, assembly/manufacturing, testing, customer support and service & installation.


Qualification Obtained

Upon completion of the programme successful applicants will graduate with an Advanced Certificate in Original Equipment Manufacturing. This is a Major Award at NFQ Level 6, awarded by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). Further opportunities may arise to progress to Level 7 & 8


Career Prospects & Progression Opportunities

Graduates of this apprenticeship programme have the potential to progress into supervisory or Management roles.

  • The Apprenticeship combines on the job training with off the job training centre and college based study.


  • This Apprenticeship is in conjunction with Cavan & Monaghan & Limerick & Clare ETB and has a duration of 3 years.


  • The programme leads to a Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Engineering awarded by QQI.


  • This programme would suit individuals from an agricultural background who wishes to pursue a career in Engineering.
