Overview

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) are a group of Irish companies, mostly in the Engineering Sector, that provide innovative and practical solutions to a broad range of customer’s needs.  Many are market leaders in their field.  They range in size from SME’s and family run businesses to larger companies. The OEM Apprenticeship is targeted at the Original Equipment Manufacturing, Installation and Services Sector which sells to National and International markets.

 

Objective of the Apprenticeship

The OEM Apprenticeship has two core objectives

  1. To provide trained OEM Apprentices, thereby bridging the gap for the OEM industry.
  2. To offer credible career paths and progression routes for these apprentices.

 

Why choose this Career?

The OEM Sector manufactures a range of products that contain complex electrical, battery, electro-mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic technology. As an OEM Technician you will be trained in a diverse range of engineering skills in order to assemble a varied range of components, involving a range of processes, in order to manufacture and support original equipment. An OEM Engineering Technician is tasked with assembling, testing, servicing and maintaining a range of original, engineered plant and equipment, to include unique & bespoke solutions to customer’s needs.

  • This will involve assembling, testing and commissioning systems, electrical wiring systems, battery powered systems, hydraulics systems, pneumatic systems and control systems.
  • Interpreting technical data and use calibration, torquing, and testing instruments for effective product assembly, fault diagnosis and rectification.
  • Installation and calibration of sensors and transmitting and controlling devices.
  • Working with cross functional teams such as research and development, assembly/manufacturing, testing, customer support and service & installation.

 

Qualification Obtained

Upon completion of the programme successful applicants will graduate with an Advanced Certificate in Original Equipment Manufacturing.(Awarding body, QQI Major Award at NFQ Level 6)

 

Career Prospects & Progression Opportunities

Graduates of this apprenticeship programme have the potential to progress into supervisory or Management roles.

 

OEM Apprenticeship Requirements/ Information:

  • Leaving Certificate/ Leaving Certificate Applied
  • The Apprenticeship combines on the job training with off the job training centre and college based study.
  • This Apprenticeship is in conjunction with Cavan & Monaghan & Limerick & Clare ETB and has a duration of 3 years.
  • The programme leads to a Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Engineering awarded by QQI.
  • This programme would suit individuals from an agricultural background who wishes to pursue a career in Engineering.

McHale are seeking to recruit Experienced Agricultural Mechanics with a minimum of 3-4 years’ experience.  These are full time permanent roles and the successful candidates will be based full time in our Ballinrobe factory.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Investigate any hydraulic and/or electrical problems should they arise.
  • Identify and highlight defects or quality issues.
  • Responsible for the running and testing of agricultural machinery.
  • Work as part of a busy assembly team.
  • Work with service and R&D engineers carrying out continuous improvements and modifications on machines.

Technical Documentation Specialist Engineer
Location: Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
Title: Technical Documentation Specialist Engineer

McHale is currently seeking to recruit a Technical Documentation Specialist Engineer on a full time permanent contract based in our R &D Department in Ballinrobe Co. Mayo to assist in compiling and reviewing technical manuals and other associated  activities.

The person will be required to compile and continually update technical publications, to our style guidelines, as well as co-ordinate and manage the translation and review process, in various languages. They should be capable of explaining complex information, using images and illustrations, in a clear and concise manner. A logical thinker, with excellent IT skills and an understanding of machinery, electronics, etc.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have relevant experience, using authoring software like Adobe FrameMaker or equivalent. They should also be proficient in image capturing, editing and manipulation and show great attention to detail. A good working knowledge of engineering drawings, electronic controls and experience in 3D Design (CAD) and/or Illustration packages is also desirable.

We are currently seeking applications from candidates who possess the following skills and attributes;

  • Three to five years experience in the design and compilation of technical documentation.

Embedded Software Engineer
Location: Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, Ireland
Title: Embedded Software Engineer

McHale is an export driven manufacturer of agricultural baling and wrapping machinery, located in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo which are sold in over 56 countries

Role: Embedded Software Engineer

McHale is looking to recruit an Embedded Software Engineer with 2- 3 years’ experience. To lead in the full software development life cycle i.e. design, develop and maintain C embedded software for control systems on agricultural machinery. This position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively and independently. The successful candidate must have familiarity with electronic circuitry to the degree necessary to test and debug software functions on target hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement software of embedded devices and systems using C, C++ and C#
  • Analyse, monitor and enhance the efficiency and stability of embedded systems.
  • Proactively review and recommend improvements to existing system designs.
  • Management of software repositories using the ‘Git’ version control system.
  • Participate in design and code review process with software engineers.
  • Collaborate with engineers and service personnel to debug and resolve software issues.
  • Liaise with customers to understand and interpret their needs and address issues.
  • Perform modifications on existing embedded software to add improved functionality.
  • Follow standards and industry best practices to improve system performance and safety including unit testing and compliance with MISRA C guidelines.
  • System testing and debugging using JTAG, Serial Wire Debug (SWD).
  • Create daily documentation of software code changes including state char diagrams.
  • Create technical specification documents for software.
  • Provide technical assistance to other engineers as required.
  • Provide production support when necessary.

 Key Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience of software design in embedded systems and real-time applications, particularly in embedded C.
  • Experience with hardware/software debugging equipment.
  • Good knowledge of hardware design, micro-controllers and electronics
  • Knowledge of CAN bus systems and communication protocols is an advantage but not essential.

Educational Qualifications:

A level 7 or preferably a level 8 degree in a technical, science or engineering discipline within any of the following areas: software engineering, IT, Computer science, Maths, Electronics, Applied Physics.
